A Woman’s Seed to Meet Man’s Need (Part 2)
Now in the sixth month the angel Gabriel was sent by God to a city of Galilee named Nazareth, 27 to a virgin betrothed to a man whose name was Joseph, of the house of David. The virgin’s name was Mary. 28 And having come in, the angel said to her, “Rejoice, highly favored one, the Lord is with you; blessed are you among women!” 29 But when she saw him, she was troubled at his saying, and considered what manner of greeting this was. 30 Then the angel said to her, “Do not be afraid, Mary, for you have found favor with God. 31 And behold, you will conceive in your womb and bring forth a Son, and shall call His name Jesus. 32 He will be great, and will be called the Son of the Highest; and the Lord God will give Him the throne of His father David. 33 And He will reign over the house of Jacob forever, and of His kingdom there will be no end.” 34 Then Mary said to the angel, “How can this be, since I do not know a man?” 35 And the angel answered and said to her, “The Holy Spirit will come upon you, and the power of the Highest will overshadow you; therefore, also, that Holy One who is to be born will be called the Son of God. 36 Now indeed, Elizabeth your relative has also conceived a son in her old age; and this is now the sixth month for her who was called barren. 37 For with God nothing will be impossible.” 38 Then Mary said, “Behold the maidservant of the Lord! Let it be to me according to your word.” And the angel departed from her. Luke 1:26-38 NKJV
The virgin birth of Jesus is a miracle that many find hard to believe, but there are three historical facts to support our faith: (1) Luke was a medical doctor and knew exactly how babies are made; (2) Luke was a meticulous researcher who wrote two books in the New Testament and based his Gospel on eyewitness accounts as shown in Luke chapter one and Acts chapter one; and, (3) If we Christians worship the God who created the heavens and earth and the universe, shouldn’t this same God have the power to impregnate a virgin with His Holy seed?
God’s holy Seed conceived in Mary’s womb was named “Jesus.” Jesus is the Greek translation for the Hebrew name Joshua which means Jehovah saves. Just as Joshua led Israel into the Promised Land, Jesus leads His people into eternal salvation, i.e., He would save His people from their sins (Matt. 1:21).
The miraculous conception and birth of Jesus was prophecy fulfilled (Gen 3:15; Isa. 7:14; Dan. 9:24-27; Gal. 4:4-5). The angel Gabriel’s appearance to announce the coming of the Messiah manifested that Mary’s time had come. Sin and death entered the world through Adam and Eve’s disobedience, but the righteousness of Christ came thru Mary’s faith in Gabriel’s message and Jesus’ obedience (Rom. 5:19). Jesus was born of the virgin to redeem us from the curse of the Law (Gal. 3:13). The Law was added because of transgressions until the Seed should come to whom the promise was made (Gal. 3:19). Mary’s faith and obedience gave birth to hope and redemption for all generations (Luke 1:38, 48). It was a woman’s seed to meet mankind’s need!
