Obedience Unlocks the Blessings
For with God nothing will be impossible.” Then Mary said, “Behold the maidservant of the Lord! Let it be to me according to your word.” And the angel departed from her. Luke 1:37-38 NKJV
When the angel Gabriel appeared to Mary and said to her, “Do not be afraid, Mary, for you have found favor with God. And behold, you will conceive in your womb and bring forth a Son, and shall call His name Jesus. He will be great, and will be called the Son of the Highest; and the Lord God will give Him the throne of His father David. And He will reign over the house of Jacob forever, and of His kingdom there will be no end” . . . [t]hen Mary said to the angel, “How can this be, since I do not know a man?” (Luke 1:30-34).
The Angel replied, “with God nothing will be impossible.” Then Mary said, “Behold the maidservant of the Lord! Let it be to me according to your word.” (text). Mary demonstrated an obedient spirit that unlocked the blessing of the Christ-child being sent to save the world from its sin.
Obedience is a willingness to hear God’s voice and follow His commands. Like Mary, our lives must be a continuous process of making the will of God and obedience to His will our greatest ambition. After Jesus was born, lived and ministered here on earth, the Scripture says of Him, “[T]hough [Jesus] was a Son, yet He learned obedience by the things which He suffered. And having been perfected, He became the author of eternal salvation to all who obey Him . . .” (Hebrews 5:8-9 NKJV). When Jesus chose to obey the Father, His obedience led to great suffering. Because He suffered perfectly for our sake, when we choose to obey the Lord, the blessings of God are unlocked for us much like they were unlocked for the world through Mary’s faith and obedience.
God has laid up a multitude of blessings to those who love Him (Heb. 4:3), and are called according to His purpose (Rom. 8:28). Even though it may appear to be impossible, those blessings are manifested in response to our faith and obedience. Like Mary, we will must renew our commitment to the Lord in the obedience of faith, celebrate His goodness and see our blessings unlocked. For with God nothing will be impossible!
