But why do you call Me ‘Lord, Lord,’ and not do the things which I say?   Whoever comes to Me, and hears My sayings and does them, I will show you whom he is like:  He is like a man building a house, who dug deep and laid the foundation on the rock. And when the flood arose, the stream beat vehemently against that house, and could not shake it, for it was founded on the rock.  But he who heard and did nothing is like a man who built a house on the earth without a foundation, against which the stream beat vehemently; and immediately it fell. And the ruin of that house was great. Luke 6:46-49 NKJV

Every home must have a proper foundation. Family members, more often than not, gain their values from the home structure, i.e., father/husband, wife/mother, and children relating to one another in a healthy way. The home is also where role models should be found and one’s concept of God should be developed. Your attitude toward authority, responsibilities, companionship, protectiveness, and a sense of security are primarily established first in a home environment.

What is the only proper foundation of the home? For no other foundation can anyone lay than that which is laid, which is Jesus Christ (1 Corinthians 3:11-12).  Homes with Jesus Christ and His teachings in the center of their beliefs, values, and practices should enjoy the blessings and favor of the Lord.  Good understanding wins favor, but the way of the unfaithful is hard (Proverbs 13:15). Homes without Christ as their foundation will experience difficulty—sometimes extreme difficulty.

A proper foundation for the home is first laid by the parent(s). Parental attitudes and behavioral patterns that have been established in the home will ultimately affect all outside relationships of their children. The strengths that we find in our churches or elsewhere in society are directly related to the strength of the home. Either a home is being built on the Word of God or those humanistic values that are like sinking sand in the face of a fiery challenge.

More is instilled by the good examples of the parent(s) than by what is learned by their persistent instruction. These influences in the home environment have far-reaching consequences later on in your life. Thank God for every home that is built on the Rock!
